Product Spotlight: Latest oils and lubricants for heavy-duty fleets

Feb. 27, 2024
A look at the latest oil and lubricant offerings from 11 companies that power commercial vehicles.

Cenex

Cenex Maxtron synthetic diesel engine oils, Maxtron Enviro-EDGE and Maxtron DEO, are designed to perform in harsh conditions. Engineered with high-quality ingredients and EnduroVis star polymer technology, Cenex said its diesel engine oils protect engines longer to extend equipment life. The balanced additive package provides improved deposit and contamination control to reduce unnecessary wear and restores fuel economy by up to 3% in extreme conditions and 2% in normal conditions. To protect critical components in the harshest conditions, synthetic base oils are said to provide faster oil flow in extremely low temperatures and minimize oil thinning in extreme heat. According to Cenex, Maxtron synthetic diesel engine oils reduce downtime.

Chevron

Chevron Caltex’s Delo Gold Ultra SAE 15W-40 is a high-performance, multigrade, heavy-duty diesel engine oil specifically designed to lubricate a wide range of engines requiring API CI-4 or ACEA E7 performance lubricants, including those fitted with selective catalytic reduction and exhaust gas recirculation emission control technologies. Delo Gold Ultra is formulated with ISOSYN technology to provide soot dispersion, deposit control, and wear protection.

Citgo

Mystik JT-6 synthetic heavy-duty 460 grease from Citgo is designed for various heavy-duty applications. This grease is formulated with a lithium complex thickener system combined with synthetic base oils that can increase bearing life and equipment reliability. Because of its formulation, it provides better wear control, EP performance, and water resistance. All of these capabilities are crucial in commercial trucking. According to Citgo, the corrosion protection designed into this grease goes above and beyond in applications where corrosive environments occur daily.

ExxonMobil

Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40 full synthetic performance heavy-duty diesel engine oil helps extend engine life while providing long drain capability and fuel economy benefits for modern diesel engines operating in severe applications. Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5W-40 engine oil is for all super-high-performance diesel applications, including modern low-emission engine designs with exhaust gas recirculation. According to the company, it helps maintain performance at higher temperatures and is also compatible with conventional oils. Its extended drain capability helps increase operating efficiency and lower overall costs.

Imonza Oil

Imonza Oil’s Galp galaxia extreme supra X 5W30 is a fully synthetic lubricant for heavy-duty diesel engines operating in severe conditions. Due to its low ash, phosphorus, and sulfur content, it protects the longevity of advanced exhaust gas treatment systems, such as diesel particulate filters, exhaust gas recirculation systems, and catalytic converters of nitrogen oxides. According to the company, it allows for extended oil change intervals, even under extreme use conditions, maximizing the vehicle's availability and minimizing operating costs. Its low viscosity (grade 5W-30) allows for fuel economy without compromising the engine's protection against wear.

Irving Oil

Irving Oil’s HD Hydraulic 10W is a heavy-duty hydraulic oil formulated with a high zinc content, dispersant, and detergent additives for heavy equipment, including Caterpillar hydraulic systems and hydrostatic transmissions. HD Hydraulic 10W is designed for equipment specifying Cat HYDO  Advanced 10 and other manufacturers’ mobile hydraulic units.

Petro-Canada

Petro-Canada Lubricants DuraDrive HD Synthetic 668 is specially formulated for Allison Transmission’s TES 668 specification. The automatic transmission fluid offers enhanced anti-shudder performance and oxidation control and protects vital components. In addition, the company said it reduces wear and unplanned maintenance and increases life span. DuraDrive HD Synthetic 668 is specified for on-highway vehicles, including vocational applications, and is fully backward compatible with all 1000-4000 Series Allison transmissions that require an approved TES 295 fluid as well as H 40/50 EP and eGen Flex Allison transmissions. In addition to being Factory Fill for Allison Transmission from the launch date in 2020, the product now also has Volvo STD 1273,41 transmission oil 97341 (AT101), Voith H55.6335 (standard drain), MB-Approval 236.92 / DTFR 13C190, and Dana OHTM-ATF-X approvals.

Phillips 66

Phillips 66 Power-D is a synthetic blend universal fleet engine oil designed for use in on-highway diesel trucks and off-highway diesel equipment, in passenger cars, and light-duty trucks with either diesel or gasoline engines where the viscosity grade is appropriate. It is recommended for use both in EGR-equipped diesel engines and in older, non-EGR diesel engines. It also will provide protection for gasoline engines in mixed commercial fleets.

Shell

Shell Rotella T6 10W-30 full synthetic heavy-duty engine oil with Triple Protection Plus technology provides better wear protection than conventional and synthetic blends and improved fuel economy in the fastest-growing viscosity grade for diesel-powered vehicles, according to the company. The oil delivers enhanced fuel economy capability of up to 2%, saving money in fuel consumption without compromising engine protection or durability. Increased protection against oxidation maintains fuel economy throughout the oil drain interval. The company said its Shell Rotella T6 10W-30 offers extreme temperature protection in hot conditions and improved cold start performance in cold weather so that the oil reaches critical engine parts in cold temperatures. The fully synthetic oil has a pour point of  -39°C and performs well in locations with large ambient temperature ranges, whatever the season. In most instances, Shell RotellaT6 10W-30 can be used in place of a 15W-40 engine oil.

Starfire Oil

Starfire Synthetic Blend HD engine oils are engineered for heavy-duty diesel and gasoline engines operating under all service conditions. These include today’s emission-controlled engines with EGR and diesel particulate filters using ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel and low sulfur diesel. The company said the oils provide extra protection and performance compared with conventional engine oil formulations, with oxidation control and soot suspension characteristics to protect extended drain intervals.

Valvoline

Valvoline Premium Blue One Solution Gen2 oil is endorsed and recommended by Cummins for all its engines. This premium CK-4 compatible engine oil is formulated for diesel, gas, and natural gas engines, providing a 5,000-mile ODI extension on X15 and X12 engines or 500 hours in L9N natural gas engines. That includes a 5,000-mile drain extension for Premium Blue One Solution Gen2 and Premium Blue Extreme in Cummins X15/X12 engines, which the company said enables up to 80,000 miles when average fuel efficiency is 7 mpg or higher.
