Equipment, technology and people are helping auto hauler expand

Moore Transport is on a rapid growth path. In 2013, the Richardson, TX-based auto hauler had 22 trucks. Today it fields 150 units, and it is adding new equipment at a rate of 20 to 30 trucks per month.

Founded in 2005 by CEO Gary Moore, the company’s success is built on several factors. Having owned multiple dealerships, Moore says he learned how to best service new-car dealers, including how to meet their need for high-quality auto transport solutions.

In 2010, Dan Faircloth joined Moore Transport as COO and immediately began building relationships with auto manufacturers. The manufacturer-to-dealer specialist network he helped create today provides services to almost every major automaker doing business in the U.S.

“To support these relationships,” Moore says, “we’re building a fleet that allows for the ability to expand operational capacity. Significant investments in new assets have kept dependability high, with the average vehicle age between 1.5 and two years. Also, our trailers have the capacity to carry 11 vehicles, an above industry normal load factor.”

Moore Transport operates from 17 company locations, including terminals in Ohio, North Carolina, Michigan, Rhode Island, Maryland, and Virginia. The company’s fleet includes 2015 and 2016 model-year Volvo, Peterbilt, and Freightliner units coupled mainly to Cottrell trailers, a mix of quick loaders, and high rails including NextGen units that utilize straps to soft-tie the inventory in a manner that prevents damage.

An aggressive preventive maintenance program, headed up by vice president of maintenance Mike Morvilius, keeps equipment free of defects. The fleet is maintained at two company shops, with a third location planned.

Outside providers, such as AmeriQuest Transportation Services and its Road Rescue call center and network of approved service providers, are also used. FleetNet America’s towing and third-party service provider network as well as its TMcare program help manage maintenance and repair events.

“Technology is the key to accurate and timely information,” Mike Owens, vice president of technology, says, “so we’ve invested heavily in our transportation management system and in leading-edge in-cab technologies. All of our equipment has Qualcomm mobile computing platforms, and all drivers are assigned hand-held devices. The systems communicate real-time, accurate information on location, routing, fuel optimization and hours of service. The tablets are also used for electronic proof of delivery, which allows our customers to invoice their customers faster.”

“Our drivers access Qualcomm elecronic log and hours-of-service applications and automatically capture and record driving and off-duty time,” Moore adds. “We have some drivers who are home every night and others who can be on the road for three or more days, and most of them favor utilizing the HOS module because they realize they can make the same money and get more rest under the new rules.”

Overall, the opportunities, equipment and technology offered by Moore Transport are making it easier to recruit new drivers. As a result, even with 20 or more new trucks being added to the fleet every month, it has no empty seats to fill.
