Mack launches Super Econodyne tour

Oct. 31, 2012

Designed to showcase its fuel-efficiency and powertrain-integrity capabilities, Mack Truckshas begun a North American tour featuring its Super Econodyne powertrain package. Super Econodyne-equipped Mack Pinnacle models are currently traveling between Mack dealers throughout the U.S. and Canada, “giving customers an opportunity to experience the fuel economy and performance benefits of the recently introduced integrated powertrain package,” said the OEM.

According to Mack, Super Econodyne trucks “efficiently and effectively integrates the Mack MP8-445SE engine, Mack mDrive automated manual transmission and Mack C125 axles, thus “exemplifying the benefits of a Mack Pedigree powertrain. “

Mack stated that by spec’ing Super Econodyne, “customers realize up to a 3.5% improvement in fuel efficiency compared to other similarly spec’d vehicles – with equivalent or better power and performance.”

“This tour is a dynamic way for customers to experience first-hand the benefits of a Mack integrated powertrain solution,” said John Walsh, Mack ‘s vp of marketing. “Like all Mack Pedigree powertrains – Mack engine, Mack transmission, Mack axles – Super Econodyne capitalizes on the seamless communication that comes with the front-to-back use of proprietary components. The result is a powerful, performance-driven ride that enhances customer profitability, as well as driver satisfaction.”

Available in all Mack Pinnacles, according to the OEM, the Super Econodyne spec is engineered to “down speed” more than 200 rpm at a highway speed of 65 mph, cruising at 1,160 rpm vs. 1,380 rpm. “This reduces fuel consumption by 2% compared with previous engine models – with a corresponding reduction in CO2emissions,” noted Mack. “An additional 1.5% improvement in fuel economy is delivered through the Mack C125 drive axles.”

Mack said its mDrive automated manual transmission is also critical to the fuel economy delivered by Super Econodyne. The 12-speed unit has no clutch pedal and the gearshift is operated by an “intelligent” shift pad module and managed by sophisticated electronics. Changes in grade, speed, acceleration, throttle position, torque demand and combined vehicle weight are constantly monitored by the mDRIVE, the OEM noted, which also features two-speed reverse functionality to better control both road speed and engine speed.

“The Super Econodyne powertrain package is the ultimate Mack highway experience,” Walsh said.  “For more than a century, Mack has built durable, safe, reliable trucks. Super Econodyne builds on this legacy and takes performance to new levels with intelligent vehicle and powertrain integration helping our customers be more efficient and successful.”

The Super Econodyne tour will be in Texas and Louisiana through mid-November and will then continue to the Southwest and Central U.S. and eventually to Canada in spring 2013.
