New synthetic Delo 400 said to offer up to 4.5% fuel economy improvement

Aug. 24, 2012

Chevron Products Co. has launched a new brand of synthetic oil that it said will provide up to 4.5% fuel economy improvement in short-haul operations with a Class 6 truck. According to Chevron, long-haul Class 8 trucks could see a 2% improvement with the Delo 400 LE Synthetic SAE 5W-30 when compared to a SAE 15W-40 reference oil in SAE J1321 fuel consumption testing.

The new oil is recommended for engines in which the API CJ-4 or API SN service categories and SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade are recommended.  The oil is designed to meet the demands of EGR and EGR/SCR engines while also providing the highest levels of performance in other diesel engine technologies, Chevron said.

“We understand that many of our customers are focused on managing fuel costs. Lubricants can play an important role in improving fuel economy, allowing fleet owners to reduce operating costs and stay competitive,” said Jim Gambill, North America Commercial and Industrial brand manager, Chevron Products Company.  “Chevron is committed to helping its customers decrease expenses by delivering products designed to reduce fuel consumption. Our new Delo 400 LE Synthetic SAE 5W-30 is part of Chevron’s vision to offer a line of lubricants that deliver fuel economy without sacrificing engine or component durability.”

The oil offers cold-starting reliability, Chevron said, due to its low viscosity synthetic base stocks, while also protecting against wear and corrosion and helping extend diesel particulate filter life. Chevron said internal testing showed wear levels and oil drains similar to those achieved with a SAE 15W-40 oil.

Delo 400 LE Synthetic SAE 5W-30 is approved for API Service Categories CJ-4, CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, SN; Mack EO-O Premium Plus; Renault VI RLD-3; and Volvo VDS-4. Delo 400 LE Synthetic SAE 5W-30 is also recommended for use in Caterpillar engines in off-highway or construction applications in conditions where SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade is recommended. In addition, it meets the requirements of ACEA European Service Categories E-6, E-7 and E-9.

Delo 400 LE Synthetic SAE 5W-30, to be available in the fourth quarter, is formulated for use with low sulfur and ultra low sulfur diesel fuels, gasoline, most gasoline fuel blends, and many biofuel formulations.
