Charge air coolers for Class 6-8 vehicles

A new line of charge air coolers from Alliance Truck Parts is now available for most makes and models of Class 6-8 commercial trucks and buses.

The coolers are new construction and feature bar-and-plate construction instead of fin and tube, leading to greater durability and more efficient heat transfer, Alliance said.

“Fuel efficiency and overall performance are two areas where quality charge air coolers can make a significant impact,” said Daniel Haggerty, director of parts marketing for Daimler Trucks North America, parent to Alliance. “A properly functioning charge air cooler is vital to maintaining fuel economy, horsepower and emissions, but many operators are not checking them regularly for leaks.”

According to Alliance, non- or low-performing charge air coolers can lead to loss of engine power; increased fuel consumption; elevated soot levels in engine oil; premature piston, ring and valve failure; turbocharger failure; elevated coolant temperatures; and exhaust manifold failure.

“To illustrate the importance of the charge air cooler to engine efficiency, a leaking charge air cooler steals horsepower and can lower fuel economy by more than a half-mile per gallon,” said Haggerty. “At today’s diesel prices of well above $3.50/gal., that could result in a loss of more than $6,760 a year for each truck averaging 500 mi. a day. Doing a periodic charge air cooler check should be as automatic as checking the oil.”

The charge air coolers are available now for Dodge, Ford, Freightliner, International, Kenworth, Mack, Peterbilt, Sterling, Volvo, Western Star, and other class 6-8 trucks and buses. They carry a 1-year unlimited mileage warranty and are tested to OEM specs.
