Continental Tire the America’s research team has created a new tire design that the company has incorporated into a radial steer tire for construction and severe duty applications.

The Continental HSC1 (heavy steer construction) was developed by the company’s commercial vehicle tire research and development team for the Americas. It uses a tread pattern and compound designed for optimal original mileage with self-cleaning properties.

Continental also unveiled a new drive tire, the HDC1, as well. Both tires were presented for the first time last week at a customer event at the company’s proving grounds in Uvalde, TX.

The HSC1 also has a three-groove design created to perform well, even on loose surfaces, Continental said. Wider tread and shoulder ribs improve wear and increase performance and reduced stone retention and improved impact resistance are characteristics of the new tread pattern and contour.

The HSC1 is available in sizes 11R22.5 and 11R24.5 for load range H, with 12R sizes scheduled for introduction later this summer.

Continental also introduced a new extra-deep drive tire for construction service. The HDC 1 (heavy drive construction) features a full 32/32 in. tread depth and self-cleaning tread pattern.

“The great news for our customers is that we developed these tires specifically for the rugged conditions found throughout the Americas. We’re confident that the HSC1 and HDC1 will prove themselves for durability and long mileage, on the toughest job sites and the worst roads our customers can find,” Clif Armstrong, director of commercial truck tire marketing, said.

The HDC1 includes a heavy-duty compound and aggressive open shoulder design and the tire’s optimized contour results in higher load capabilities with less deformation, the company said.

The HDC1 is available in sizes 11R22.5 and 11R24.5 in load range H.

Both new tires use Continental’s on/off road compounding which increases resistance to tread cuts, chips, and chunks. The company’s “Stable” bead construction is utilized in each tire as is a premium four-ply belt with reinforced second and third belt to prevent fatigue fractures.
