ST. LOUIS. Kenworth Truck Co. showcased a number of products at the Work Truck Show, including updated engine offerings for the medium-duty market.

The engines, along with a new driver information system and axle, were introduced at the National Truck Equipment Assn.’s Work Truck Show here.

Kenworth’s Paccar PX-6 and PX-8 engine offerings are available for the T270 Class 6 and T370 Class 7 models. The T170 Class 5 truck is available with a Paccar PX-6 engine.

“The 2010 Paccar PX-6 and Paccar PX-8 engines offer enhancements in torque and horsepower options which will provide greater benefits to Kenworth customers in a variety of medium-duty applications,” said Jason Skoog, director of marketing planning and research. “Both engines feature a fully integrated electronic control system for increased power density, enhanced reliability and serviceability, and optimized performance.”

Ratings for the PX-6 are 200 to 325 hp with torque from 520 to 750 lb.-ft., while the PX-8 offers 260 to 350 hp and 660 to 1,000 lb.-ft. of torque for heavier loads and severe grades. Both engines feature a high pressure common rail fuel injection system, improved cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), patented variable geometry turbocharger (VGT), and new after-treatment system.

For 2010, the engines offer three diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) tank options in 6.6, 9 and 18 gal. capacities, which provide diesel fuel capacities of 110, 150 and 300 gallons, respectively.

The PX-8 contains many features typical of heavy duty engine design, including replaceable wet liners, roller followers, 2-piece steel articulated pistons, by-pass oil filtration and targeted piston cooling, Kenworth said.

Four exhaust options – right-hand (passenger) side under the cab, horizontal, horizontal in-series, and vertical independent – are available for Kenworth medium duty vehicles equipped with the engines.

“Clear back of cab is an important feature for many body installations and Kenworth is proud to have true clear back of cab options for our body builder partners and customers,” noted Skoog.

The versatility of Kenworth Truck Co.’s T370 medium-duty offering has improved with the introduction of a 16,000 lb. rated front axle.

“Our new axle rating for the Kenworth T370 broadens our commitment to support medium duty vocational applications, such as fuel hauler, dump, mixer, utility, service truck and others, which require a heavier front axle to get the job done,” said Gary Moore, assistant gm for marketing and sales.

The axle includes taperleaf springs, a choice of single or dual steering gears, and up to 315 series tires.

Kenworth also unveiled a multiplex instrumentation and driver information center. They are the same systems currently available in the company’s heavy-duty offerings.

The instrumentation system includes color-coded wiring and a modern, ergonomic dash. Large, 2-in diameter gauges with chrome bezels, an engine hour meter, odometer, trip odometer and outside temperature gauge are also included.

In addition, a diesel particulate filter status indicator lamp, high exhaust system temperature warning lamp, and seatbelt reminder light are included. LED back-lighting is used in the face plate and pointers, and the dash rocker switches contain LED indicator lights.

The driver information center provides instant trip access information for mpg, engine and idle hours, idle percentage and optimum rpm range. A “sweet spot indicator” offers visual cues when the optimum rpm is reached, while a bar graph displays current mpg against trip average mpg.
