Volvo Trucks North America has partnered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to develop a variety of specs and components for the Volvo VN that would deliver the fuel efficiency and low emissions needed to receive EPA’s SmartWay Tractor designation.
Volvo said that SmartWay-eligible specs will include ’07 engines, aerodynamic enhancements, anti-idling options and low rolling resistance tires.
Volvo customers will have SmartWay-eligible tractor packages available in the later second quarter.
EPA has developed a similar program for trailers. SmartWay tractor-trailer is a component of EPA’s SmartWay Transport Partnership, a public-private program designed to boost the transportation industry’s fuel efficiency while clamping down on emissions.
