Firestone Industrial Products Company, LLC, has announced it is strengthening its environmental efforts with company-wide, green initiatives driven in part by the new Firestone Executive Environmental Committee, which was formed in March of this year.

“Firestone Industrial Products is committed to doing its part to reduce the company’s impact on the environment,” saidClair McCloy, COO & Executive Environmental Committee member. “Through aggressive recycling programs, environmental management certifications and community outreach programs, Firestone is helping to preserve the environment for future generations.”

Company-wide efforts, including water conservation, energy efficient improvements and sustainable product enhancements are among the environmentally conscious advancements under way at Firestone Industrial Products.

Firestone Industrial Products said its recycling efforts have already accounted for more than 5,000 tons of recycled materials in 2008, including uncured fabric rubber, oil, plastics, metals and fluorescent bulbs/ballasts. Through updated lighting and the installation of capacitors, the company is making strides in becoming more energy efficient.

As a result of a more-efficient manufacturing process, the Dyersburg, TN., plant has drastically reduced the waste it produces-- by 25 tons in the past year. A significant portion of the waste reduction was accomplished by adjusting specifications for steel coils. By reducing the width of the steel coils, the plant decreased the amount of scrap metal after parts are stamped out.

Additionally, Firestone Industrial Products continues to meet the International Organization for Standardization’s (ISO) stringent environmental guidelines. Currently, three plants are ISO 14001-certified and three additional plants are preparing for certification.

Through preservation programs such as Keep America Beautiful and the Wildlife Habitat Council, teamed with community efforts that include river and road beautification events and installing bird houses, Firestone Industrial Products is helping clean up communities, protect wildlife and keep local areas green, the company noted.

“Firestone Industrial Products has already come a long way in its environmental efforts. We will continue to help lead the greening of the trucking industry with more eco-efficient practices, products and procedures,” added McCloy.
