The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have ordered 100 Volvo VNL 300 day/cabs and 100 Mack Pinnacle Axle Back day/cabs for the initial phase of their Clean Trucks Program. That initiative will see the ports replace the more than 16,000 drayage units currently serving container operations with modern, environmentally friendly trucks.

According to the ports, the Clean Trucks program will bar 1988 and older trucks from entering shipping terminals beginning October 1, 2008. All 2006 and older trucks will be banned by 2012, which the ports said will reduce truck-related pollution by 80%.

The Volvo VNL 300 day/cab is powered by a Volvo D13 engine rated at 405 hp, which meets the California Air Resources Board’s (CARB) low-NOx idle requirements. It also features improved visibility, Volvo Enhanced Stability Technology (VEST) and a two-way telematics system for online monitoring by fleets and operators, Volvo said.

According to Mack, the Pinnacle Axle Back day/cabs features a Mack MP7 engine rated at 395 hp, also meeting CARB’s low-NOx idle requirements. The truck also boasts improved fuel economy, a 48-in. sleeper, and Mack’s Roll Stability Advantage.
