Global vehicle tracking and fleet management system provider MiX Telematics is launching a new carbon-offset program. It aims to help fleet owners improve carbon dioxide (CO2) emission management by guaranteeing a secure, accessible and cost-effective way to offset the greenhouse gas emissions produced by their vehicles.

“Globally, the road transportation industry is responsible for 18% of the world’s CO2 emissions,” said Brian McCoy, vp-business development at MiX Telematics North America. “Our new Carbon Offset Initiative (COI) will help our clients move us towards a climate neutral environment, which can benefit our natural resources and our economy.”

He noted that the MiX’s COI is designed for customers who cannot allocate resources to implement an effective carbon-reduction initiative with a long-term value.

“This is an ideal extension of our products that are being used to monitor driver behavior for fleets across the country,” said McCoy. “By understanding an operator’s driving habits, such as harsh acceleration, hard braking or excessive idling, we can help reduce fuel consumption and minimize fleet maintenance and operating costs.

“While the COI is not mandated, he added, “it’s one more way MiX is developing solutions that help clients work towards climate neutrality.”

Stressing that MiX’s COI falls within the voluntary offset market, McCoy said it can be considered a strategic move by fleets that use it to mitigate future risk of non-compliance and carbon taxes.
