Teletouch goes dual-mode

Wireless service provider Teletouch Communications Inc. will offer two dual-mode modems that can communicate over the Orbcomm low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite network, as well as terrestrial-based cellular data networks. Developed by Quake Global, the Q2000-CDMA adds wireless data service via Verizon and Sprint CDMA 1xRTT networks to its satellite capability. The Q2000-GSM provides GSM data service over the Cingular and T-Mobile land-based networks.

The dual-mode approach offers near real-time communications over the lower-cost, high-speed cellular networks when coverage is available. Outside of cellular coverage, the new modems automatically switch to the LEO network, providing fleets with wireless communications in almost all situations and locations.

Teletouch has also announced stop/start motion detection for its new wireless tracking system. The new self-contained system, which communicates over the LEO satellite network, is available as a one-way device that sends location reports on a schedule, a two-way device that can be polled for location, and a power-line device that attaches to a trailer or truck power source and transmits vehicle location, fuel level and speed.

The stop/start function notifies dispatchers when a vehicle is moving and when it leaves a geofence location such as a terminal. Prices for the tracking hardware are said to start at $350.
