A satellite modem that is smaller, faster and more power efficient, is at the heart of a self-new powered trailer tracking unit that can last up to seven years without replacing its battery, according to it developer.

The new GlobalWave satellite data communications terminal requires no external power hookups, is less than an inch high, can be installed on a loaded trailer in 10 minutes, and responds to location polls within one minute, says developer and manufacturer TransCore.

The company says it will offer two versions of the trailer tracker: one that offers basic tracking; and a second that is capable of monitoring cargo, tire pressure, temperature and other sensors. Both support two-way data communications over a satellite network for seamless coverage throughout North America.

TransCore says it currently has 40,000 installed GlobalWave mobile terminals worldwide. www.transcore.com
