Thermo King has developed a new refrigeration system for temperature-controlled transportation operators that it claims is more environmentally friendly than other devices. The SB-III CR is a cryogenically controlled refrigeration unit that uses carbon dioxide gas for heating and cooling operations. According to Thermo King, the carbon-dioxide based system eliminates the need to use the typical ozone-depleting commercial refrigerants.

The SB-III CR also has 98% fewer moving parts than conventional reefer systems, reducing operational noise and cutting maintenance costs.

The new reefer is a high capacity, one-piece, front-powered unit designed for trailers. It will be introduced to the European market first, and then in the U.S. later this year.
