The new dual-mode Dominium service was launched by ARINC Inc. at the recent Truckload Carriers Assn. meeting.

Using both ground-based wireless and satellite-based communications networks, it is designed to bring together truck tracking, load management, and driver communications capabilities.

According to Fred Jacoby, senior vp, the dual-mode service is intended to allow smaller truckload and LTL fleets to use the latest vehicle communications and tracking technology to increase productivity.

"We believe the Dominium service delivers the best balance of benefits-to-cost value in total communications and management flexibility across the widest possible range of applications, assets, and equipment types," said Jacoby.

The dual-mode service incorporates GPS, BellSouth Wireless data network, Mobitex wireless data service, and Orbcomm low-earth-orbit satellite service for messaging and tracking.

Jacoby said this "comprehensive combination will provide robust and uninterrupted asset tracking and communications coverage throughout the U.S., Canada, and Mexico."

He listed notable features of the new service as "driver-centric" or portable two-way messaging/ paging; automatic and polled transmission of position reports; and two-way transmission of status and commands.
