Cummins is offering an “uptime guarantee” program for its EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) engines, which were designed to meet the stricter emissions standards that go into effect this month.

If any part on an EGR-equipped ISX or ISM engine fails and can't be repaired within 24 hr., Cummins will pay for the repairs and provide a rental vehicle at no cost. That guarantee applies even if the component failure is not related to the EGR system, Cummins adds.

“The cooled EGR subsystem in the new ISX and ISM engines has undergone more real-world testing than any new product launch in our history-testing that exceeds 6.5-million road miles,” says Tom Kieffer, Cummins' executive director of marketing. “As a result, we are announcing this program to the industry to eliminate any concern customers may have in purchasing our new products.”

The uptime guarantee applies to Cummins ISX and ISM engines purchased between Oct. 1, 2002, and March 31, 2003, with coverage from the date of purchase through Dec. 31, 2003.

Cummins is also offering three new extended warranty options for these engines. The company notes that its base warranty of 2-yr./250,000-mi. coverage applies to all cooled EGR subsystem components and its new Variable Geometry (VG) Turbo. That warranty also provides full parts and labor on warrantable failures, travel or towing for first year from date of delivery, and consumables. Fuel injectors are covered for 2 yr./125,000 mi.
