Free wireless data transfer over low-powered radio frequency (RF) networks has been added as an option for the VMI fleet management system from Minorplanet Systems USA. Used largely by regional service fleets, VMI is an asset management system that downloads vehicle data over the GSM cellular network.
The new RF option will help fleets reduce communications costs by shifting some or all data transfers to wireless local area networks, allowing cost-free data transfers when vehicles enter network coverage.
