Riding wide
Michelin says its new X-One single tire offers a cost-effective, fuel-efficient alternative to traditional dual tire sets on tandem-axle tractors and trailers. The wide tire is being introduced initially in a 445/50R22.5 size with either an XDA drive or XTA trailer tread pattern. The tire maker notes this size is interchangeable with dual low-profile 22.5 tires “for simpler fitment.”
Michelin says that going from two wheels to one per axle end reduces weight and lowers rolling resistance by decreasing the number of flexing sidewalls.
The X-One incorporates InfiniCoil technology, which the company says is a unique stabilizing belt construction that runs perpendicular to the radial ply to optimize wear and handling.
Currently, the X-One XDA is available for 6x4 OEM tractor purchase through Freightliner, Sterling, and Western Star and as a replacement unit from Michelin dealers. The X-One XTA is available for OEM purchase through various trailer builders and for replacement use from Michelin dealers.
