Determined to reduce the number of used trucks on their hands, a major OEM and a giant lessor have separately launched new programs specifically aimed at moving more vehicles onto their second owners.
Freightliner LLC has created a retail sales group aimed at selling used trucks to fleets. The group will work with the OEM's SelecTrucks sales centers as well as with Freightliner, Sterling and Western Star dealers to develop new fleet customers for late-model Class 6 to 8 used vehicles.
“In establishing a dedicated used-truck retail fleet sales group, we are allocating significant new management resources to our used-truck sales effort,” said Bill Gordon, president of Freightliner's used-truck business unit.
According to Gordon, the new operation will focus on fleets that do not have an existing used-truck relationship with a SelecTrucks center or one of the OEM's dealers. He said customers targeted by the sales group will include medium and large fleets that traditionally buy used trucks or those that currently purchase new, competitive-make trucks but may be better served by buying high-quality, late-model vehicles instead.

Ryder System Inc. has initiated a used-truck sales program that will target North American truck fleets as well as operations dealing in export sales.
“Ryder's internal used-truck transaction data shows that a growing percentage of our used-truck volume is being purchased by fleet operators,” said Tracy Leinbach, executive vp-fleet management solutions for the Miami, FL-based lessor.
According to Leinbach, Road Ready used trucks are single-owner trucks equipped with quality components and parts configurations that have been road-tested and performance-monitored within the Ryder fleet.
In the U.S, Road Ready vehicle purchases include an extendable 10,000-mi./30-day no-deductible powertrain warranty.
