An integrated hardware/software system for tracking cargo moving by truck trailers, intermodal containers, rail cars and other transportation modes will be jointly developed by Qualcomm Inc. and Savi Technology. The system promises real-time visibility of assets as they move through the supply chain, offering improvements to cargo security and management.
Qualcomm will provide the WAN (wide area network) wireless communications services with its satellitebased OmniTRACS and land-based OmniExpress mobile communications systems.
Savi brings its wireless LAN (local area network) RFID (radio frequency ID) tag and electronic security seal technology to the new security system project.
Currently the two companies collaborate on systems for the Dept. of Defense's Total Asset Visibility (TAV) network, which is used to monitor and protect military cargo while it's in transit.
