Swift Transportation Co. Inc. says it's acquiring certain assets of the van division of Cardinal Freight Carriers Inc., which currently operates about 600 tractors and 1,400 trailers.

The purchase will be the second major one for the truckload carrier. It recently announced a merger with Memphis-based truckload carrier M.S. Carriers Inc.

“Since Cardinal's van division operates predominantly in the eastern U.S.,” said Swift chairman & CEO Jerry Moyes, “we expect this acquisition will complement both our existing and future East Coast operations.

“The transaction will benefit Cardinal's existing van customers by opening our national terminal network to them,” he added.
