The government is providing a programming tool for fleets that want to submit hazardous-materials incident reports electronically. The e-format may be used for incidents that occur on or after January 1, 2005.

In a notice published in the Federal Register November 17, 2004,(Docket No. RSPA-2004-18975), the Research and Special Programs Administration explained that those who choose electronic filing have two options: fill out the form online or submit the data in XML format. Instructions and a template are available at http://hazmat.dot.gov.

The e-filing option is part of the implementation of the revised Hazardous Materials Incident Report, which went into effect January 1.
