Chevron has announced that its flagship heavy-duty diesel engine oil – Delo 400 LE SAE 15W-40 – has been tested and is ready for use in 2010 truck engines. The oil supplier said that extensive field tests conducted since 2000 in nearly two dozen Volvo D12C engines using Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF), Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) technologies has shown that Delo 400 LE SAE 15W-40 provides exceptional performance in the areas of durability, reliability and the reduced production of incombustible materials in the DPF.

Chevron said these test findings have been published in multiple SAE papers (SAE 2009-01-1781; 2005-01-3716 and 2005-01-3575). Tests done in engines using DPF, SCR and DEF before Delo 400 LE 15W-40 was introduced in late 2006 were conducted with a pre-API CJ-4 Delo prototype, the company noted.

Since 2008, Chevron has been testing Delo 400 LE 15W-40 in Volvo 2010 emission-compliant engine technology using DPF, SCR and DEF. Multiple engines have accumulated between 130,000 to 190,000 miles of operations using the oil. Even with 30,000- to 40,000-mile drain intervals, the use of Delo 400 LE 15W-40 resulted in excellent engine durability and low levels of wear, the company stated.

According to Chevron, the testing showed that the oils’ “reduced level of sulfated ash (vs. similar API CI-4 PLUS oils of the same grade) resulted in substantially less incombustibles in DPF.” Lower ash levels in the DPF should result in less cleaning maintenance and potentially better fuel economy due to the lower back pressure on the exhaust, the company added.

“It is no accident that our Delo engine oils have one of the most respected reputations in the market,” said Jim McGeehan, global manager of diesel engine oil technology for Chevron Global Lubricants. “To assure our customers have lubricants they can rely on to run their businesses and protect their investments, we conduct extensive field and laboratory tests. In preparation for 2010, we have tested for nearly a decade. Our customers can rest assured that our Delo 400 LE 15W-40 will provide the protection needed in 2010 and pre-2010 engine technologies.”
