A major north-south highway in Maryland was shut down for hours Wednesday as police searched for an armed suspect spotted along the road, Maryland state police said.
The search for the suspect was continuing late Wednesday, however I-295 and Route 195 in Anne Arundel County had reopened in the late afternoon, according to Reuters. I-295 was initially closed in both directions at Route 195 south of Baltimore. The closures caused severe traffic delays for miles.
Authorities began their search Wednesday morning in response to reports of a man near the highway with a shotgun. Although no shots were reported fired, the gunman allegedly broke the car window of one motorist on the highway with a hammer.
The coordinated search effort involved a number of law enforcement agencies including canines, helicopters, and swat teams.
