Stoffel, a key driver of UPS global logistics, to retire

Robert “Bob” Stoffel, who began his 35-year career with UPS as a part-time truck loader, is retiring as senior vp for supply chain, strategy, engineering and sustainability. A member of the UPS Management Committee since 2004, his will take effect on Jan. 1, 2011.

Robert “Bob” Stoffel, who began his 35-year career with UPS as a part-time truck loader, is retiring as senior vp for supply chain, strategy, engineering and sustainability. A member of the UPS Management Committee since 2004, his will take effect on Jan. 1, 2011.

Stoffel’s responsibilities for supply chain, engineering and sustainability will be assumed by David Abney, UPS COO, while Stoffel’s duties in the strategy arena will be assigned to Alan Gershenhorn, senior vp for worldwide sales and marketing.

“Bob Stoffel has served this company with distinction for his entire working career and we will miss his counsel and interaction in the day-to-day management of UPS,” said Scott Davis, UPS chairman & CEO. “Bob has been a key leader in this company’s strategy development and transformation from a domestic package delivery company to a global logistics leader.”

Stoffel also championed UPS’s sustainability efforts, acting as a “single point of coordinated leadership” for the company’s many environmental programs.. Under his leadership, UPS said it created target goals for improving the carbon efficiency of its airline and miles per gallon performance of its vehicle fleet, while also becoming one of the first global carriers to offer a carbon neutral shipping option in the U.S.
