Showing both confidence in the economy and bucking the trend toward asset-based carriers, Eagan, MN-based Transport America has acquired Southern Cal Transport of Birmingham, AL. Transport America said the acquisition will create a company with more than 2,200 drivers, making it one of the top 15 for-hire dry -van truckload carriers in the U.S.

Trransport America stated that the transaction is “being made when many other carriers have been moving away from asset based models. Transport America recognizes more than ever the market will need carriers that control their assets, bring excellent service and are committed to hiring quality drivers.” The company add that “customers will see a strong, diverse offering of capabilities,” including over–the-road solo, more than 350 teams, dedicated, regional, intermodal, intermodal drayage, and brokerage services.

“We are very excited about this acquisition- I believe the Southern Cal and Transport America brands both are known for service excellence and have very similar cultures,” said Scott Arves, CEO of Transport America. “I have a tremendous amount of respect for Ken Adams and Phil DeSimone, CEO and president respectively, and for the team of associates they have assembled.

“The acquisition marries Transport America strengths in solo, dedicated, intermodal, brokerage, and Mexico/Canada operations with Southern Cal strengths in team, intermodal drayage, dedicated, brokerage, and regional,” added Arves. “ I believe customers will be excited by the breadth and quality of services this company offers. Initially, in order to make this transition seamless to customers, the two companies will operate independently, preserving relationships, billing, contractual relationships, etc.”

“When I decided to sell Southern Cal Transport, it was vitally important that the purchaser was aligned with our same set of values, dedication and commitment to customers, drivers and employees,” said Ken Adams, owner of Southern Cal. “Transport America is committed to merging our corporate cultures to create a strong new brand known for service excellence. Given the unique products, it also is the best possible outcome for Southern Cal associates who will be integral to the success of the new company. Phil and I look forward to working as part of this new company.”

Transport America was founded in 1984. Southern Cal Transport was founded in 1995 and purchased by Ken Adams in 1998. www.socaltransport.com or www.transportamerica.com
