Dana unveils new weight-saving driveshaft, axle housing

March 26, 2012

LOUISVILLE, KY. Dana Holding Corporation displayed its new Spicer SelecTTrac housing option on its Pro-40 tandem axle at the Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS). The housing was developed for customers who want the flexibility to convert between wide-base, single tires with low off-set wheels and standard dual wheels with a single housing.

The company also displayed its new Spicer Diamond Series driveshaft. Steve Slesinski, director, global product planning for Dana’s Commercial Vehicle Products Group, told Fleet Owner that the driveshaft is an industry-first. It is a one-piece aluminum driveshaft manufactured utilizing Dana’s patented magnetic-pulse welding process to significantly reduce weight while maintaining the strength of an all-steel system.

The result is a very robust and significantly lighter (by up to 100 lbs.) driveshaft for improved fuel efficiency and hauling capacity, he noted. It is specifically intended for applications requiring a long driveshaft, where weight has been an issue in the past.

Effective July 1, the Spicer Pro-40 with SelecTTrac and all other Spicer-branded products will be supported by Dana’s field service and support network.

To help customers understand the potential value of Dana products in their own operations, the company also introduced a new value calculator, designed to enable customers to quantify the savings and benefits associated with specifying Dana products.  The calculator makes use of competitive benchmarking and testing results to estimate results.
