At the Mid-America Trucking Show last week, engine maker Detroit Diesel Corp. (DDC) said it’s putting the finishing touches on its redeveloped Series 60 engine as well as the MBE 4000 and MBE 900 engines it will sell as EPA ’07-compliant engines.
“We’re definitely ready for EPA ’07,” said Carsten Reinhardt, DDC’s president and CEO. “We have been working on not just meeting the new emissions standards, but enhancing our three engines set to launch next January. We also have our service, technical support and manufacturing teams ready to support the engines.”
Reinhardt said the ‘07 Series 60 will be equipped with an exhaust aftertreatment system that includes both a Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) and a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) that work together to oxidize particulate matter (PM) or “soot” produced by the combustion of diesel fuel.
He noted that the Series 60’s exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) process has been optimized to dramatically cut nitrogen oxide (NOx) formation, featuring a high.-capacity, tube-and-shell EGR cooler that is more rugged than the previous model. Reinhardt added the ’07 Series 60 should consume less oil – nearly 40% less – due to the introduction of a new piston design, changes in oil control ring geometry and a smoother bore finish on the cylinder liner.
Rounding out the Series 60 changes for ’07 are:
- new electronic variable geometry
- new fuel injection system with dual solenoid Electronic Unit Injectors for exact fuel metering and enable independent injection pressure control
- next generation electronic control system, called DDEC VI, containing a more powerful microprocessor, increased memory and enhanced diagnostics
