ArvinMeritor Commercial Vehicle Systems is collaborating with Gillig Corp., a manufacturer of transit buses, to develop new emissions reduction technology, to cut particulate matter (PM) and NOx emissions from transit buses.

For its part, ArvinMeritor will develop two technologies.

  • ArvinMeritor Thermal Regenerator, an electronically-controlled system that combines a diesel particulate filter with a heat source to eliminate PM in the filter and to reduce filter regeneration issues.

  • ArvinMeritor Fuel Reformer, a technology in its final development phase that will use on-demand hydrogen gas to help bring NOx emissions to federal 2010 requirements when applied to 2004-model diesel engines. It will not require an on-board hydrogen tank or changes to infrastructure.

“We intend to benefit both the transit industry and the overall environment by creating technologies that help reduce harmful emissions, without sacrificing performance or operational efficiencies,” said Pedro Ferro, vp & general manager of ArvinMeritor’s Commercial Vehicle Exhaust division.
