Look under Trucking in the Yellow Pages and you'll find the companies that operate about 1.35-million commercial trucks. So who's responsible for the other 6-million or so trucks on our roads? The answer is private fleets, fleets that distribute products, deliver services, keep supply chains moving and perform other essential roles for their parent businesses.
Despite the importance and ubiquity of private fleet operations, they often don't get the public recognition or attention given their counterparts hauling freight for hire. However, since private fleet executives and managers make up a major portion of FLEET OWNER's readers, we've decided it was time to shine some well-deserved light on the size and scope of those operations with the first annual FLEET OWNER 500, a ranking of America's top private fleets.
Overall rank is based on total power units controlled by a fleet. We also provide a breakdown by tractors and straight trucks, as well as information on trailers in the fleet and its parent company's business. Additional charts show the largest fleets by industry and equipment type.
Transportation Technical Services (TTS) collected the data using a number of public and proprietary sources including its own Fleet Seek (www.fleetseek.com) online search tool and FLEET OWNER's subscription records. TTS then verified the data by contacting the fleets directly. The National Private Truck Council also assisted by urging members to help us update the records.
