Interpool, an Internet-based intermodal container management firm, and Maher Chassis Management have formed a joint venture to manage intermodal containers for shipping lines, railroads, and trucking companies.

The joint venture will combine Interpool’s real-time Internet-based PoolStat chassis management service with Maher Chassis’ knowledge of terminal port operations, logistics experience, and additional industry contacts and relationships.

The new venture plans to provide a variety of intermodal container management services, including cooperative management, maintenance and interchange of chassis among steamship lines, rail roads, trucking companies and other chassis users. It will also allow intermodal chassis users to pool their chassis at common locations such as marine terminals and railroad depots on a national basis.

Ultimately, the new partnership will allow the carriers to withdraw from chassis ownership and supply in the future, the companies said.
