Independent trucker Robert "Bob" R. Fezekas of Mereaux, Louisiana has filed a handwritten lawsuit Tuesday in U.S. District Court asking that the court prevent the hours of service regulations from taking effect on Sunday.
Fezekas, acting as his own lawyer, has asked the court to postpone DOT’s rule until after a trial during which he hopes to convince a jury that the hours of service regulations are not scientifically sound. "I feel that I have a good case,” he told the Associated Press.
Public Citizen has had a pending petition to stop the regulation since June in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.
Fezekas, a registered lobbyist in Louisiana for independent truckers, says that the new regulation will delay deliveries and mean less money for carriers and drivers. Fezekas, a short haul driver, adds that many drivers will spend more time on the road, and this also will cause family friction leading to increased divorces.
