Mack Trucks Inc. today announced that employees represented by the United Auto Workers (UAW) have ratified a new three-year master contract covering about 3,700 workers at Mack facilities in four states. The new contract is effective as of October 2 and will expire on October 1, 2004.

“Mack and the UAW have demonstrated their commitment to maintaining an effective working relationship, and meeting the needs of our customers,” said Mack president & CEO Paul L. Vikner. “Beyond helping us meet the current economic and market challenges the truck industry is facing, this agreement will help to position us for continued growth when the market rebounds."

Mack announced on September 28 that operations at its Winnsboro, SC, assembly facility would be phased out over a 15-month period, and the agreement includes special early retirement, relocation, severance, and outplacement provisions for the 1,067 UAW-represented employees who work at the plant, 385 of whom have been laid off.

The new contract covers members of UAW local #677 in Allentown, Macungie, and Middletown, PA; #171 and #1247 in Hagerstown, MD; #2301 in Elkridge, MD; #5841 in Winnsboro, SC; and #472 in Morrow, GA.
