Carlisle Carrier Corp. of Mechanicsburg, PA has donated free transportation services to its customers located in Pennsylvania to get food, tools, soap and pet food to the many agencies serving the World Trade Center and Pentagon relief efforts.

David L. Metzler, president and owner of Carlisle, a regional TL carrier, told Fleet Owner that several clients decided to donate the goods to the relief efforts, but did not have a way of getting the items where they are needed.

"This helps all of us at a time when we don't know what else we could be doing to help," Metzler said. "This is also something that is helping the drivers feel like they're more a part of the effort."

In addition to volunteering the carriage service, Metzler added that the company drivers involved are doing it on a volunteer basis.

"We have been honored to assist our customers, who have so generously donated truckloads of important supplies," Metzler said.

Since last Tuesday, Carlisle has transported 10 truckloads of supplies to agencies in Bronx, NY; Tarrytown, NY; Garden City Park, NY; East Hanover, NJ; Hillside, NJ; Bayonne, NJ; and Springfield, VA. Metzler said Carlisle will continue to offer its customers free transportation of goods to these agencies for as long as the need exists.

Metzler said his company will announce details of a corporate fund-raising project, named "Going a Mile for America," by the end of the week. He said the project is part of the company's continuing efforts to do what it can to help the people who are searching for survivors in the rubble and to assist the families that have lost loved ones.
