Fleetguard puts new spin on filters

NASHVILLE, TN. Fleetguard Inc. announced its new “User-Friendly Filter” design for insertable-cartridge filters at a news conference here yesterday at the Opryland Hotel. The new filters are made of advanced polymer materials and will replace the equivalent metal models in the Fleetguard line as they are introduced.

According to Fleetguard, the new design was two years in the making and results in filters that are “lightweight, strong, durable, and easy to install and remove.” The first models in the new product family are oil and fuel filters for both on- and off-highway applications requiring filters that are either 3- or 3.5-inches in diameter. The company noted these are the sizes found on 8- 10-liter diesel engines.

Fleetguard said the two initial filter sizes will be available later this month and will retail at the same price points as the parts numbers they are replacing.

"We are pleased and excited to introduce the Fleetguard user-friendly oil and fuel filter – the first of its kind – to the marketplace," said Pamela Carter, president of Fleetguard.

According to Fleetguard, using advanced polymers to construct the filter provides these key advantages:

  • More dent-resistant than metal
  • Easy-grip surface with ribs for easy installation and service
  • Flat “no-spill” rather than domed bottom
  • Rugged, corrosion-free design
  • Built-in one-way socket for easy removal with 1/2" wrench
  • No damage to filter spud due to cross-threading
  • Resists impacts and temperature extremes
  • Weighs 50% less than comparable metal filter
  • Environmentally friendly design—can be crushed/landfilled or incinerated

"This is a durable, robust new product that's been designed to meet the needs of customers and service technicians for years to come," said Jeff Hamilton, Fleetguard’s chief technical officer. "The material is strong, the technology is state of the art, and it's backed by Fleetguard's reputation for excellence in OEM and aftermarket filters.

Hamilton noted that extensive customer testing indicated a “ready acceptance” of the new filter, particularly its socket removal feature, “stand-up” ability and the lighter weight provided by polymer construction.
