The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has amended its Final Rule on safety standards for parking brakes to include all trucks, buses and multipurpose passenger vehicles with GVWR greater than 10,000 lb. Previously, the rule applied only to school buses.

Published in the Federal Register June 30, “Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards; Hydraulic and Electric Brake Systems” (49 CFR Part 571; Docket No. NHTSA-05-21400), the amendment states that minimum performance requirements for a vehicle’s service and parking brake systems now apply to all heavy vehicles.

The Final Rule takes effect June 30, 2006.

NHTSA is asking that any petitions for “reconsideration” of the amendment be submitted by August 15, 2005, to: Administrator, NHTSA, 400 Seventh St., SW, Washington, DC 20590
