Springfield, MO-based truckload carrier Prime plans to install the Iteris lane departure warning (LDW) technology on all of its 2,600 leased and company-owned trucks by the end of this year. Currently, Prime has 100 Iteris units in place.

“We are confident that having LDW technology standard on our trucks will enhance our efforts to make our highways safer for both our associates and the driving public,” said Don Lacy, director of safety.”

Lacy noted that LDW systems will be made available to drivers of leased vehicles at no additional cost.

Iteris’ LDW system is designed to prevent sideswipe, run-off-road and inadvertent lane-change accidents that can be caused by driver drowsiness, fatigue or distraction, said Bill Patrolia, the company’s director of truck sales.

The system uses a windshield-mounted camera that tracks lane markings using image recognition software and algorithms that monitor the relative position of the truck within the lane, he added. If the truck inadvertently crosses the lane markings, the system automatically emits a distinctive rumble-strip sound, alerting the driver to make a correction.
