Advisory panel to focus on alternative compliance

March 19, 2015
The Motor Carrier Safety Advisory Committee (MCSAC) will meet March 30-31 to discuss the potential benefits and feasibility of “voluntary compliance,” or ways to credit carriers and drivers who initiate and establish programs that promote safety beyond the federal regulatory standards.

Citing research that has been underway for several years, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has established an alternative compliance initiative, the goal of which is to analyze the concept and gather data to support how this concept might be developed and implemented.

The initiative stems from a request last September by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) to consider a pilot program, according to the FMCSA notice published this week.

MCSAC was established to provide FMCSA with advice and recommendations on motor carrier safety programs and motor carrier safety regulations. The committee is composed of representatives from safety advocacy, safety enforcement, labor, and the trucking and bus industries.

The meeting will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, in Arlington, VA. Copies of the MCSAC Task Statement and an agenda for the entire meeting will be made available in advance of the meeting on the MCSAC website.
