The Broadway Flying J Travel Plaza on Interstate 35 at Exit 144 is now offering plug-in electrical power. The facility is located between Des Moines, IA, and the Minnesota state line.
The power pedestal, installed by Shorepower Technologies under theShorepower Truck Electrification Project (STEP), a federally funded program aimed at reducing truck idling, provides electrical power to operate heating, air conditioning, and cab appliances. There are 24 electrified parking spaces at the Broadway Flying J center.
There is also a new installation at the Pilot Travel Center at Exit 745 on I-5 in Weed, CA.
“We think of ourselves as good corporate citizens, and offering an idle-reduction service helps us fulfill that mission for drivers, for fleet operators and for communities near our travel centers,” said Dan Alsaker, owner of Broadway Group, which owns the Broadway Flying J. “Plug-in power means drivers can have cab comforts including temperature control without the noise and air pollution of idling. With hot temperatures in summer and cold temperatures in winter, this is a service truckers need. We want to be the kind of facility a driver can get a lot of good use out of.”
“Adding Broadway Flying J to our network of truck stops offering plug-in power is an important step in making this technology a routine part of truckers’ travels,” said Jeff Kim, president & CEO of Shorepower Technologies. “Drivers will now be able to count on another location at which they can get a sound, healthful night’s rest and save money in the process.”
As part of the STEP program, equipment-purchase incentives are being made available to about 5,000 vehicle owners who commit to using the hook-ups to reduce engine idling.
Shorepower pedestals provide access to 120 VAC, 208 VAC or 240 VAC power sources, sold at a rate of $1 per hour, and to cable TV at most locations, with wireless Internet available for an additional charge. Access and payment can be handled with a credit card, gift card, smartphone, laptop or toll-free customer service hotline.
The Weed, CA, location has 36 parking spaces and also includes nine 460-volt plug-in connections for transport refrigeration units.
“As the driver-driven company, the convenience of our customers is always a top priority at Pilot Flying J,” said Mark Hazelwood, executive vice president for Pilot Flying J. “We’re proud to partner with Shorepower to offer technology at our facilities that provides drivers with entertainment at their fingertips – while also reducing greenhouse emissions. We’re very pleased that services such as 120, 208 and 240 volt power will be available to our customers at our Pilot Travel Center in Weed.”
