FMCSA opens $180M for CMV roadway safety grants

March 8, 2024
FMCSA is accepting applications until April 19 for five different grant programs promoting commercial motor vehicle safety-related activities.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration opened applications for more than $180 million in grants to promote the safety of commercial motor vehicles on the road.

Funding is available through five different grant programs open to state, territorial, and tribal organizations; local jurisdictions; academic institutions; and other training programs to promote CMV safety-related activities.

The five grant programs each have different objectives:

  1. The High Priority Innovative Technology Deployment Grant Program supports projects that advance the technological capability and deployment of intelligent transportation system applications for CMV operations. This includes linking CMV information systems/networks to federal motor carrier safety information systems and improving safety and productivity of CMVs and commercial drivers.
  2. The High Priority Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Grant Program funds activities that increase public awareness and education on CMV safety, target unsafe driving in high-risk crash corridors, demonstrate new technologies to improve CMV safety, and other similar projects.
  3. The Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator Safety Training Grant Program funds organizations that provide CMV operator training to enhance training access to members of the U.S. Armed Forces, former members, their families, and underserved communities.
  4. The Commercial Driver’s License Program Implementation Grant Program helps to enhance the national commercial driver’s license program, which is focused on ensuring each CDL driver has only one driving record and licensing document.
  5. The High Priority Enforcement Training and Support Grant Program funds motor carrier safety training development and delivery to non-Federal employees who conduct some CMV enforcement activities and develop related training materials.

“FMCSA’s core mission is safety. That’s a big job, and it’s one we cannot do alone,” said FMCSA Acting Deputy Administrator Sue Lawless in a press release. “This grant funding is one way we bring in safety partners to help reduce crashes involving large trucks and buses. We are proud to support the critical CMV safety work happening across the country.”

Grant applications for FY 2024 are due on Friday, April 19, by 5 p.m. Eastern Time. Details about each program’s application requirements, funding amount, and project eligibility can be found on FMCSA’s grants webpage.
