Cummins Inc. will officially make its ComfortGuard auxiliary power unit (APU) available to the commercial trucking market starting in January 2007.
Shawn Wasson, APU business leader for Cummins, said the new ComfortGuard product combines the generator expertise of the company’s Onan product line with tailored HVAC components. This will provide enough power for all of the so-called “hotel loads” needed by an OTR vehicle’s sleeper compartment, including refrigerator, TV, computer, heater, air conditioner, etc.
“With an increase in legislation and enforcement of truck engine idling laws and the rising cost of fuel, APUs are a must for over-the-road truckers,” he said. “We believe a ComfortGuard APU system can pay for itself through reduced engine idling in about 18 months or less.”
