Denso Sales California, Inc., an affiliate of Denso Corp. recently showcased its expanded line of heavy-duty aftermarket products. In particular, the company featured its new 12-volt, R5.0 offset gear reduction starter. The new starter is specifically designed for use on heavy-duty vehicles and other equipment with 10-liter to 16-liter engines.
According to the company, the starter is both compact and lightweight, tipping the scales at about 23 lbs. The high-torque model is designed to maximize starting power and improve cold starting. “We have been working with fleets to test this and are very encouraged by what we are seeing,” noted Diane Kenny, manager of Heavy-Duty Group, Customer Service Dept. for Denso Sales California. “We have been offering this design for some time for the medium-duty market. However, we think this is definitely revolutionary for the heavy-duty market.”
Denso’s product line includes not only starters and alternators, but also oil, cabin and air filters; spark plugs; AC compressors; oxygen sensors; ignition wires; fuel pumps and wiper blades—some 340 product lines and more than one million part numbers in all.
Among other applications, the company sees hybrids as a growth opportunity in the future. “Hybrids are very much a growth opportunity for Denso,” said Kenny. “The name ‘Denso’ means ‘electrical’ in Japanese and it is certainly a core capability. Denso parts are already on the hybrid Lexus and Prius passenger vehicles.”
