Thermo King recently introduced a multi-temperature trailer refrigeration system, the Spectrum SB, featuring the company's SmartReefer2 (SR-2) controller.

The new reefer unit can balance the temperature in up to three different zones, with Spectrum S-3 R remote evaporators enabling each zone to serve as an individual trailer. Evaporators are designed for high airflow and large capacity, according to Thermo King.

Through a bigger display screen, the SR-2 makes it possible for operators to simultaneously track data for all three of the trailer's temperature zones.

The Spectrum SB also features Smart Set, which the company says is designed to provide “precise temperature control” and “reduced fuel consumption in all operating ranges.” With cool moist air circulating throughout the cargo area, product dehydration is minimized.

The multi-temp system offers an extended maintenance interval, including a 12,000-hour coolant and high-grade mineral oil to lengthen service life.

A hybrid version of the reefer, model 50, is also available, with electric-to-diesel switching as standard.

All Spectrum SB multi-temps feature Thermo King's Whisper quiet technology, as well as engines that can accommodate biodiesel fuel.

Also new from Thermo King is Heat King, a forced-air heating unit designed to keep temperature-sensitive cargo from freezing. A Tier-II diesel-powered engine heats liquid coolant in a radiator coil and a blower forces air across the coil and into the cargo area. The heater has a belt-driven alternator that automatically recharges the unit's battery while the engine is running.
