Building on the success it says has been achieved in building a prototype electric SUV, Provo, UT-based Raser Technologies has announced it will build a plug-in, electric light-duty pickup capable of delivering up to 100 mpg.
The electric drive system powers the vehicle for up to 40 mi. on electric power only. Beyond the 40-mi. range, the 200 kW peak electric motor will generate its own electricity to continue up to 400 mi., said the company. Unlike most hybrids, the Raser electric drive is an extended-range electric system using lithium ion batteries. It is being developed in cooperation with the Plug-In Hybrid Consortium Development. Fuel is used only to charge the motor.

“Successful demonstration of Raser's E-REV drive system in utility and government fleets may lead the way to mass production of 100 mpg trucks and revival in truck sales,” said James Spellman, vp-transportation business development for Raser Technologies.
Raser said the electric drive system is designed for use with light trucks such as the Chevy Silverado, Ford F-150 and the Dodge Ram.
