Insurance company State Farm is introducing a new “driver feedback” application for the iPhone and iPod touch that’s designed to help vehicle operators drive more safely.
State farm said its new Feedback app taps into the iPhone or iPod touch’s accelerometer to measure three essential driving behaviors: Acceleration, braking, and cornering. At the end of each trip, the driver is then provided a score and a log of dangerous activities based on those metrics and provides tips for improvement.
State Farm noted that research from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that hard acceleration, deceleration and cornering are associated with higher crash risk.
Other key features of this new app include: The ability to record trips and receive feedback on driving performance; a map illustrating where potentially dangerous activities occurred; the ability for drivers to compare their scores; a trip completion notification allowing a driver to send a text or email to someone when they safely complete their trip; and multi-trip average scores – up to five – to track progress.
