Using digital cellular networks for its primary communications channel, PeopleNet's next generation of on-board computer (OBC) significantly increases wireless communications speeds for data intensive applications like in-cab mapping and document scanning. The new g3 OBC also retains analog cellular capability for better coverage in remote areas.

The new unit provides a USB 2.0 port for expanding memory or running peripherals such as handhelds, scanners, printers and WiFi access points. In addition to improved processing power and memory compared to the g2x OBC, the g3's GPS receiver improved location accuracy with wide area augmentation system (WAAS) technology.

Like the previous generation, the new OBC supports over-the-air-programming and established PeopleNet applications such as eDriver Logs, PACOS message automation, geofencing, activity standards, fuel-tax reporting, driver emails and PerformX engine diagnostics. The g3 is backwards-compatible with the g2x as well, and continues to support open API access to third-party applications.
