Insurance company State Farm is introducing a new “driver feedback” application for the iPhone and iPod Touch that's designed to help vehicle operators become safer drivers.

State Farm said its new feedback app taps into the iPhone or iPod Touch accelerometer to measure three essential driving behaviors: acceleration, braking and cornering. At the end of each trip, the driver is provided a score and a log of dangerous activities based on those metrics, as well as tips for improvement.

Other key features of this new app include the ability to record trips and receive feedback on driving performance; a map illustrating where potentially dangerous activities occurred; and the ability for drivers to compare their scores.
