An automated activity-based pay plan based on drivers' completion of specific tasks or meeting specific performance goals has been rolled out by Mattingly Foods Inc. of Zanesville, OH, using a wireless system and professional services provided by Qualcomm Wireless Business Solutions. For example, drivers are paid for each delivery they complete or for fueling their vehicles, and they can earn additional incentive bonuses based on controlling idling time, vehicle speed and engine revs.
The company, a food distribution business with operations in 19 midwestern states, says automating its payroll plan has cut processing time from several days to just three hours, while improving accuracy.
More importantly, the company says linking driver pay to productivity has helped it boost productivity and lower fuel costs. It also reports that drivers receive clear, accurate accounts of their earnings, while also gaining faster access to earned pay through automated reimbursements.
