The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has announced it will revisit approximately 1,500 hazmat carriers to advise them to take certain security steps to prevent the threat of turning their cargo into a weapon of mass destruction. The visits, which will begin in the Spring, will concentrate on carriers who handle munitions and certain other chemicals, according to William A. Quade, head of FMCSA's hazmat division. Quade said the follow-up visits would coincide with new government security rules affecting hazmat carriers. He said the government is looking to see what progress has been made in advance of any future rules.
