SAFETY CONFERENCE SUCCESSFUL

NPTC's second annual National Safety Conference attracted more then 70 participants including representatives from 40 private fleet companies and nine Allied member exhibitors from throughout the country. The conference is a one-of-a-kind learning experience focused exclusively on safety from the perspective of the private fleet culture. The range, substance, and sophistication of conference presentations, from both regulatory compliance and fleet management vantage points, focused on strategic planning and practical, take-away solutions.

Speakers included Chuck Horan, FMCSA; Ken Higgins, J.F. Fick, Inc.; and Rick Preston, Sentinel Transportation; Jim York, Zurich Insurance; Bill Perry, CTP, CDS, McKee Foods; technical specialists from the EPA; Bob Inderbitzen, CTP, of NPTC; Rick Schweitzer, NPTC General Counsel; David J. Osiecki, ATA; and Liz Miller Peterson, The Schwan Food Company. Attendees rated the conference “very good” to “excellent.” Bruce Perkins, CTP, Chair of the Council's Safety Committee, said “It was a terrific conference.”

CERTIFIED TRANSPORTATION PROFESSIONAL® (CTP) UPDATE

Over two dozen candidates have already registered for the CTP examination which is scheduled for February 12, 2005, at various locations throughout the United States. The majority of candidates are from Fleet member companies, however Allied members participate as well. Managers who become CTPs appreciate the cross training it affords. CTPs achieve a depth and comprehension of subject matter covering the entire spectrum of private fleet management. This allows for a better understanding of how other departments and functions operate within their own companies, as well as sharpen their own job-related skills, knowledge and decision-making abilities.

Here are the following key dates to remember:

  • November 15, 2004: CTP Examination Application and Fee Deadline
  • January 1, 2005: CTP Candidate Recognition Application Deadline

NATIONAL ADVISORY BOARD

NPTC's National Advisory Board is made up of members of the Council's Standing Committees. The purpose of the Advisory Board is to review new proposed projects under consideration by the Council and make recommendations to the Board of Directors. The Council's Standing Committees are:

Membership Committee — supports staff in the recruitment and retention of fleet and supplier members and is currently planning a strategic campaign to build fleet membership in states with the largest number of current fleet members. Committee Chair is Tony Jolly, CTP, of General Mills.

Legislative & Regulatory Advisory Committee — provides the Board of Directors and staff with assistance in the development of official NPTC policy as it relates to government affairs issues. Committee Chair is Rick Foster of Wal-Mart.

Conference Planning Committee — advises the Board and staff on the planning and organization of the Council's Annual Education Management Conference and Exhibition. Committee Chair is Deb Stone, CTP, of McKee Foods Corporation.

Safety Committee — promotes and fosters motor carrier safety through the development of Council policies which affect private fleet safety management practices and influence federal regulatory agencies. Committee Chair is Bruce Perkins, CTP, of Yorktown, Inc.

Public Relations/Marketing Committee — provides the Board of Directors and staff with advice and recommendations concerning marketing and public relations functions, and participates in the development of efforts to market all products to the transportation marketplace and to optimize the public relations presence of NPTC in the trade press. Committe Chair is Gary S. Putman, CTP, of BP.

ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2005:

The 2005 NPTC Annual Education Management Conference and Exhibition, Bridges to Excellence, will be held in Pittsburgh, PA, April 24-26. The event will feature more than 25 educational workshops and over 100 exhibitors. ACT I will host the famous “Rock and Roll” party for all attendees on Sunday evening, April 24th.

FLEET MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE - 2005 UPDATE

Registrations for the Institute 2005 are optimally limited to 50 attendees and seats are filling rapidly. This event is a concentrated, in-depth and comprehensive five-day learning experience for fleet professionals, January 15-19, 2005, at the Renaissance Grand Hotel in St. Louis, MO. The 2004 Institute in Nashville received the “highest” ratings from participants and the 2005 program promises to be even bigger and better.

The Institute offers nearly 50 hours of instruction on Fleet Finance; Operations; Legal; Regulatory and Safety Compliance; Human Resources; and Maintenance and Equipment. The program reflects the most current insights into best practices, benchmarking and operational excellence and is presented by the industry's top private fleet management experts.

A special feature of the Institute is a “Fuel Economy Forum” panel of invited technology experts. This panel, scheduled for Monday afternoon, January 17, 2005, will be followed with a business networking reception sponsored by Allied/Supplier members of NPTC.
